Do you want to change your story?

Avery Davis, MA LPC

We are creatures of pattern and story.  Your internal interpretation of the meaning of your story is important… and reconsidering what else it could mean, reprocessing it, and trying new patterns in the ways you interact with your own story can make your life much more fulfilling.

This sort of thinking is the basis of the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and EMDR therapeutic methods I find most useful, combined with my compassion for everyone’s unique current state.

If you are struggling in your day to day life and want to learn new skills for coping differently, I may be able to help.  I am passionate about helping others build a life worth living.  Intense emotions like shame, fear and sadness can make change feel impossible but evidence shows that we can grow and heal.  Therapy can be a great place to begin the healing process.

Why DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy works because it non-judgmentally teaches new skills in how to live in the moment, cope healthily with stress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships with others. Dialectical behavior therapy is an evidence-based psychotherapy that was developed by Marsha M. Linehan. DBT has been proven useful in treating mood disorders, suicidal ideation, and for change in behavioral patterns such as self-harm and substance abuse… and many healthy people find it to just make sense in improving the effectiveness of their internal thoughts and interaction with the world. It focuses on Acceptance, Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Why EMDR?

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy addresses our neurology through physical movement combined with memory.  We are prone to develop maladaptive neural networks in the way we consciously and unconsciously remember traumatic events.  By connecting a traumatic memory with new information, EMDR helps integrate distressing thoughts and emotions with healthy, new positive thoughts and emotions.  This evidence-proven therapy can deliver long-term positive change and significant reduction in the pain of coping with the past.
